That's a nice little essay, there. A good read.

As long as the Soviets could hold on to Baku, I think the outcome would remain in doubt, since petroleum-propelled airplanes and armor kind of had obsoleted horses by that time.

Dumb question: What were "they" fighting so furiously about, at Stalingrad?
