The Battle of Kursk signaled the collapse of the German front. As they fell back, they began cranking up the death camps in anticipation of war on their own turf against a lot of pissed off Hungarians,Czech,Yugos,Partisan Italians and others.
The main reason the Allies invaded Normandy was the specter of Soviet domination of Europe. In any event, Hitler was given a long leash, so that The Reich could set the Soviet back about two decades in consumer economic development. This could allow the West to point to Russia as a classic case of Socialist failure. It would also be important to bankrupt them on defense and nuclear development. After all, the Soviet had the bomb, and a somewhat obsolete means of delivery to North America, but we always had the upper hand in Europe. The Communist threat was largely a fantasy, created by American media - much as the terrorist threat is enlarged today and given a bigger than life golf ball tumor in the American brain. |
