Crossbowman:"Survival Strategy" Actually, having several offspring is no guarantee of them having much time to spare for things like repainting your (lucky you) bathroom. Better not count on it.
Doesn't that impulse result from "selfishness", which doesn't necessarily obtain altruistic behavior? Selfishness, in my view results in over-acquisition of material things, but then, it's nice and comforting to have "rich" shotgun-armed neighbors watching out for you, taking down the two departing Hispanic burglars, from the neighbor's house, as just happened in Texas.
In brief: Senses of materialism and community can get out of hand? Crossbowman: (Further arguments against birth control and genetically modified crops in the "third" world.) I persist in preferring teaching them how to make windmlls and solar collector panels at (if necessary) apprentice level wages. That is, how to "fish". That is, produce, rather than expensively ship dried cod (gag) from Norway to their food banks. In other words, we should selectively hesitate, at least, as we offer them means and free time to reproduce more prolifically. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_oven Use in Darfur refugee camps"Cardboard, aluminum foil, and plastic bags for well over 10,000 solar cookers have been donated to the Iridimi refugee camp and Touloum refugee camps in Chad by the combined efforts of the Jewish World Watch, the Dutch foundation KoZon, and Solar Cookers International. The refugees construct the cookers themselves, using the donated supplies and locally purchased Arabic gum,[9] and use them for midday and evening meals. The goal of this project was to reduce the Darfuri women's need to leave the relative safety of the camp to gather firewood, which exposed them to a high risk of being beaten, raped, kidnapped, or murdered.[10][11][12] It has also significantly reduced the amount of time women spend tending open fires each day, with the results that they are healthier and they have more time to grow vegetables for their families and make handicrafts for export.[9]"
